Larkin and Lacey’s Encounter With The Vicious Sheriff Joe Arpaio

Joe Arpaio is one of America’s notorious Sheriffs in Maricopa County, Arizona. He was always found committing horrible acts such as wrongful imprisonment or detainment of Latinos and immigrants from various nations of the world.

His law enforcement tactics were sometimes brutal and aggressive. He had various lawsuits filed against him and that did not deter him from committing his crime against women and immigrants.

Jim Larkin and Michael Lacey Exposes Arpaio

Arpaio continued in his atrocities, encouraging his employees to abuse their powers, and they continued in the racial discrimination of Latinos in Maricopa County of Arizona.

This led to the intervention of Village Voice Media owners, Jim Larkin and Michael Lacey. They discovered his wicked acts and started to expose him in their publications.

They started to print stories about him in various newspapers about his various orders against women and inmates who were labeled as immigrants.

These stories published got the attention of the United States District Judge, Murray Snow, who told the Sheriff that it wasn’t lawful to detain Immigrants based on suspicions.

The judge stated that suspicion wasn’t a sufficient ground for detainment of any Immigrants. Joe Arpaio remained unperturbed that he was already getting suits filed against him and still continued in his violation of the right of immigrant Latinos. Arpaio got disturbed by the rising awareness of his misdeeds and tried to silence the sources of the information. On 18 Oct. 2017, Armed deputies ordered by Joe Arpaio from selective enforcement units arrested Mike Lacey and Jim Lankin on claims that they were disclosing details about a grand-jury investigation.

They were released after 24 days in prison, they filed a lawsuit against Arpaio and were awarded a settlement of $3.7 million. Arpaio did not only lose the suit but also lost his re-election into the office for a seventh term as Sheriff.

In 2016, Arpaio endorsed Donald Trump’s candidacy for the United States President. He spoke up for Donald Trump and encouraged his supporters to vote for Trump. In 2017, He was charged with contempt of court, which could have earned him a maximum sentence of six-month imprisonment. But the President Donald Trump gave him a pardon.
