Scientists can grow indoor crops effectively with glass roof panels located on greenhouses, and the power from the sun. Enough solar electricity can be generated with special pink glass to control the temperatures of the greenhouses. These panels have been named Wavelength Selective Photovoltaic Systems, and a magenta luminescent dye is embedded.
During growth, plants detect the lights quantity, direction, quality, and duration. The colors are discerned in light waves through photoreceptors. When the sunlight goes through the pink panels, some of the blue, and most of the green wavelengths are removed by the dye. The red wavelengths are enhanced, and photosynthesis activity increases. The captured green and blue wavelengths are transformed into energy by being embedded in photovoltaic strips.
Plant growth is not hindered by the pink panels, and better growth was observed in twenty percent of the plants. The panels were tested on twenty varieties of plants including lemons, cucumbers, tomatoes, peppers, limes, basil and strawberries. The technology is a big step for the greenhouse food industry, with over nine million acres used for greenhouses.
Despite being used all year for growing produce, greenhouses can be energy intensive due to the costs of controlling the temperature, and keeping them lit. The estimate is four acres of greenhouses require 18 million kWh to light and heat per year. More research to establish the sustainability of the pink panels is required.
